What Gives Me the Right to Talk?

I was a very happy child, until I realized (actually "decided") that my parents couldn't act the way they did if they really loved me.  After that, my childhood home wasn’t happy or loving.  It was really an emotional battlefield.  I was confused by words about love while in the midst of what seemed like a fight for domination.  My parents’ God had strict rules and was quick to punish.  I was taught to fight against my feelings.  It all left me confused and wondering how the conflicting things I was being taught could be true.  To sort it out, I decided that I had to rely on truth and reason.  So I determined that I would only give attention to advice or guidance that made sense.

As a teenager, I came across some psychology books which explained how my mind, emotions and muscles were all tied together, and that they acted in unison.  Later, while living in Asia, I obtained a Master's Degree in Oriental cultures and philosophies.  I learned a mental exercise called “Hung-Saw” meditation from a 30-minute cassette tape I had borrowed.  Meditation taught me to relax and to stop worrying.

When I reached a turning point during a difficult period of my life, the super-happy feelings that I had felt as a young child suddenly returned.  On top of that, I became keenly aware of the inputs from all my senses:  the tremendous beauty everywhere, the incredibly wonderful feelings throughout my body, the fabulous tastes and sounds.  My mind became clear, quiet, and peaceful, while my thought process seemed instantaneous.  I realized that I could handle anything and that I'd come out happy, so I felt no fear of anything.  Because I wasn't afraid, I paid complete attention to those I was talking to --- focusing completely on them without worrying about what they might think of me --- and I could see the good in each of them.  The happiness of others made me happy.

This book gives you techniques and methods you can use to be happier and to find your own answers.  The nice part is that it all makes sense.
